"What project are you working on next?"

Writer's picture: Sweet StemsSweet Stems

This is a question my nephew's wife (my niece-in-law) asks me regularly and I love it. Being able to gush about our dreams and goals is refreshing and it also makes me feel like we are very productive people:). Sometimes my answer is, "I'm not sure..." Usually when I say that it's because we just got finished with a project that we are still recovering from. Other times my answer rolls of my tongue because we are in the thick of something exciting and I just can’t help but share the plan and get opinions and reactions. Currently, Gene (my husband) is outside sawing lumber for raised beds. These five beds aren’t for flowers (shocking, I know). They are for veggies! For at least three years, Gene has focused on helping me reach my dream of Sweet Stems. He has grown chard and spinach and some other veggies here and there. But, our plan/vision was to have a fenced-off (because elk) garden with a series of raised beds filled to the brim with delicious farm-fresh veggies and maybe a flower or two nestled in for color;). Our nephew and niece and their families came over the other weekend and helped us even-out the ground and take out clumps of sod in the garden. Lumber was delivered earlier this week. Gene has been busy cutting pieces to their proper size (while the chickens supervise). We’re having soil delivered next week. The goal is to have the beds done and ready for planting by May 8th! I guess you could say this project is like a lifelong dream for both of us…coming true in a matter of a few weeks. Thanks to family, hard work and never giving up hope!
